Search Engines and Subject Indexes
A Short Introduction
This introduction to searching the internet gives a brief explanation of serveral terms and defines different types of internet pages for searching like individual search engines, meta-search engines, subject indexes, and more...
Individual Search Engines are used to search for a subject by entering a word or words describing that subject. These search engines will return a list of web sites related to that subject. Meta-Search Engines allow a search to be submitted to several search engines at the same time.
Subject Indexes are for those searchers who know the topics that they are looking for and want to browse through lists of subjects related to these topics. Internet Portals are hybrids containing links to both search engines and subject directories. Kid Safe Search Sites are directories and search engines which have been screened or filtered to remove objectionable content.
Specialized Subject Indexes and Search Engines are search engines and directories for one particular topic such as movies, medicine or government information.
All-in-One Search Pages contain forms which let you submit your search terms to search engines and directories individually from that search page without having to travel to the web site of each search engine.

General Search Engines
Important Engines, Part 1
This short article lists some of the bigger and more important general search engines. Since there are so many different engines this is only a small selection - furthermore in part 2 of this article we will give some more examples.
Web search engine
A web search engine is designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally presented in a list of results and are often called hits. The information may consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Unlike Web directories, which are maintained by human editors, search engines operate algorithmically or are a mixture of algorithmic and human input.

Individual Search Engine Sites
A Short Introduction
Search engines index web sites using electronic means such as spiders, robots or worms which roam the web and compile a database of information. In its basic form, the results list from a search of this database contains a list of web sites which contain that search term, and the placement of the web sites on that list is based upon the frequency of the appearance of that term, its location on the page and similar factors.

Stories from A-Z
Further Topics, Searching the Internet
Nowadays many lists of webpages (including these pages on Avalon's Treasury) offer the possibility to not only provide a title and a short description for your site but to also publish a whole story that points to your website. You should use this opportunity since an informative story acquires much more new visitors for your internet pages than a simple entry in a list of websites.
Writing for the internet is a special challenge since most visitors of a webpage only skim through texts in order to find the information they were seeking as quickly as possible. It is therefore very important to structure your stories in a way that makes them easy to comprehend and quick to read. In this context it is helpful to start the text with a summary of its content and only then to explain more details step by step - this way the visitor of the webpage can decide after every paragraph if he already has learned enough or if he wants to read more information.
Use short paragraphs that structure your story in single ideas - a maximum of 3-4 sentences per paragraph is ideal. Besides the main heading of the story subheadings should be used so that visitors can find the part of the text they are interested in by skimming. The headings should not be longer than 10 words and summarize the following part of the story in an informative way. Also the usage of bold and italic words offers the possibility to highlight important passages of the text. But italic characters can be hard to read on screen - if they are used to mark citations quotation marks therefore can be used as an alternative for highlighting.
Lists with bullets are also ideal to structure ideas in a way that can be captured at a glance and that differs from the rest of the text - if you want to stress the amount of information in your story (e.g. 8 Methods for Writing better Stories) you can also use numbered lists. Furthermore images and references are elements that attract attention and thereby structure a story - if possible your images should have a highlighted caption that gets the attention of your readers. References can be combined with quotations and lead to the originator of the statement - if you highlight quotations using coloured text the structure of your story is enhanced further.
The stories on this page http://www.alte
.html were structured like recommended and therefore invite our visitors to read them quickly and to go to the mentioned websites. This is the information about our website and this page if you want to point to it:
- Website: Our short description is "Online Shop for Jewelry and Books about Crystal Healing and Alternative Health".
- Page: Websites and stories about "Further Topics, Searching the Internet" can be found on this page.
Stories are today very often used for pointing to one's own website since they entertain and inform the visitor of a webpage and this way bring more interested readers to the site. Make sure that your stories are structured in a way that allows the skimming of the text - by this you will gain more readers which in the long run leads to more visitors of your website.
