Information on Gems
Topaz is a mineral composed mostly of aluminum and flourine that has a chemical formula of Al2SiO4(F,OH)2. Topaz is a prized gemstone, with this being the mineral's only real value. The topaz is the birthstone of November and the state mineral of both Utah and Texas.
In its pure form, a topaz is a colorless stone. However, impurities may tint a topaz. There are also brownish and yellowish topaz found in nature, with pink, red, orange and blue ones much more rare.
The topaz is an extremely hard mineral and is used on the Moh's scale of hardness, which goes from one to ten, to represent the hardness level associated with eight. This means that it can only be scratched by those minerals with a higher hardness number, such as diamonds.
Despite its hardness, topaz tends to break rather easily along its cleavage lines. This makes it better suited for jewelry such as earrings and necklaces that do not get hit or bumped a great deal while being worn.
Countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Russia and Brazil are the leading producers of topaz. The mineral was believed by the ancient Greeks to have the ability to make people stronger, and the Egyptians employed the stone to protect themselves from injuries.
One of the most popular kinds of topaz is the blue topaz. Since these are very hard to come by naturally, gemstone dealers will bombard a clear topaz with radiation and then heat it to attain a blue color. The majority of blue topaz on the market has been treated in this way.

Amethyst is a precious stone that is purple or violet in nature. Amethyst has been present since the beginning of history and the ancient Greeks thought that it had supernatural properties to ward off intoxication. In fact, the word amethyst has its roots in Greek meaning not to intoxicate. Today amethyst is a popular precious stone used to enhance beautiful jewelry.
What is a mineral?
A mineral is a naturally occurring solid formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. A rock, by comparison, is an aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids, and need not have a specific chemical composition. Minerals range in composition from pure elements and simple salts to very complex silicates with thousands of known forms. The study of minerals is called mineralogy.
The Mohs Mineral Hardness Scale
The Mohs scale was devised by Friedrich Mohs in 1812 (and therefore it's never spelled "Moh's"). You use the Mohs scale by testing your unknown mineral against one of these standard minerals. Whichever one scratches the other is harder, and if both scratch each other they are both the same hardness.

Stories from A-Z
Jewelry, Gems and Minerals - Precious Stones
Nowadays it is often standard not only to add your website to a list of webpages using a short description but to write an informative story which points to your site. Also we offer you the possibility to tell your readers more about yourself thereby making a lasting impression which would be impossible by simply using a title and a short description alone.
Texts for the internet should be written differently than stories for a newspaper or a book: Since most of the visitors of an internet page only skim through the offered texts in order to find the information they seek as quickly as possible a solid structure of your story is crucial for its success. It is therefore best to already start your text with a summarizing overview and to only then present the detail information step by step - this way your readers will know from the beginning what the text will be about.
The different ideas of your story should be arranged as short paragraphs which should not be longer than 3-4 sentences. Certainly your text starts with a main heading that summarizes the content of the story, that is to the point and that is not longer than 10 words - but also subheadings should be used as additional structural elements. Furthermore important parts of the story should be written in bold or italics if they are citations. Since italic characters can be hard to read on screen alternatively citations can be highlighted using quotation marks or (as we will see later) they can be written in colour if they are especially important for your story. But please make sure that you don't overuse coloured or bold text since your story otherwise can become confusing.
All structural elements mentioned so far make it easier to quickly skim through a text and to find the information sought. For the same purpose also bulleted lists are ideal especially if you want to talk about different facts that you have to present in a structured manner. It is also true that numbered lists can enhance the overall clearness if you want to talk about a fixed number of ideas (e.g. The 10 best Methods to make your Website famous). Also images and references structure a story: Images can enhance the interest for a text further by using an informative caption and references can lead to the originator of a quotation - these citations are best marked by coloured text to make them stand out even more.
The stories on this page http://www.alte
es.html were structured like recommended and therefore invite our visitors to read them quickly and to go to the mentioned websites. This is the information about our website and this page if you want to point to it:
- Website: Our short description is "Avalon's Treasury".
- Page: Stories and websites about "Jewelry, Gems and Minerals, Minerals and Precious Stones" can be found on this page.
Stories are today very often used for pointing to one's own website since they entertain and inform the visitor of a webpage and this way bring more interested readers to the site. Make sure that your stories are structured in a way that allows the skimming of the text - by this you will gain more readers which in the long run leads to more visitors of your website.
